The head teacher at a new £28m "super school" in East Kilbride has been accused of assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Douglas Cosgrove, 54, was reported to police on 2 October - the same day the new St Andrew's and St Bride's High School was officially opened.

Strathclyde Police confirmed they were investigating an allegation of assault.

South Lanarkshire Council said no member of staff at the school had been suspended.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "We can confirm a 54-year-old man is the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal in connection with an alleged assault on a 15-year-old girl on 2 October."

A South Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: "We are aware the police are investigating an allegation of assault on a pupil of St Andrew's and St Bride's High School in East Kilbride.

"The Council understands that a report will be passed to the procurator fiscal's office.

"Schools in South Lanarkshire are on holiday this week. No member of staff has been suspended."
