A 56-year-old woman and a man, 55, both from Essex, were detained over a theft from a private house in the county, Hertfordshire police said. Eric Emmett, 55 and his wife June, 56, from Nazeing, Essex, were arrested on suspicion of theft on Friday and released on bail.
Reports in the media suggested that allegedly stolen items were placed for sale on the internet auction site eBay. It is understood police acted after items belonging to the former England captain and his wife appeared on eBay.
Mr Emmett described the allegations as "fabricated nonsense".
'Harshest penalties'
A spokesman for the Beckhams said the matter was in the hands of the police.
Mr Emmett said: "What is in the papers is fabricated nonsense.
"Totally fabricated, 99% of it is totally untrue."
