Doctor Who pair up for TV awards

David Tennant and his Doctor Who co-star Catherine Tate will square up against each other at this month's National Television Awards.

The duo have both been nominated for outstanding drama performance for their parts in the BBC One sci-fi drama.

They face Ashes To Ashes' Philip Glenister and Alex Walkinshaw of The Bill in the category, which replaces the best actor and actress prizes.

This year's awards take place on 29 October and will air live on ITV1.

Sir Trevor McDonald returns to present the show, and fans can vote online or by phone to decide the winners in each category.

Tennant, 37, who has previously won two National Television Awards, has not yet said if he will return for a fifth series of the revived series.

Tate, 40, has won acclaim for her role as sidekick Donna Noble.

Talent shows

Ant and Dec could win their eighth entertainment presenter prizeStrictly Come Dancing, The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Dancing on Ice line up against each other in the most popular talent show category.

Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, The Apprentice and This Morning will battle Top Gear for the most popular factual programme prize - an award Jeremy Clarkson's car show has won for the past two years.

Alan Carr, Justin Lee Collins and Paul O'Grady will try to loosen Ant and Dec's hold on the entertainment presenter award, while the Geordie duo are also up for most popular entertainment programme for Saturday Night Takeaway, alongside Big Brother, I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and The Paul O'Grady Show.

Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks are the contenders in the most popular serial drama category.

Sir Trevor said: "The variety of nominees this year shows the remarkable range and diversity of the programmes and performers we all love to watch.

"The NTAs provide a unique opportunity for the industry to gauge public opinion and it will be a huge night for all of us who love great TV."
