Two men and a woman have been rescued from two separate flats after an arson attack in Londonderry.

It is thought the fire began after sparklers were pushed through the letterbox of the building on Claragh Crescent at about 2030 BST on Saturday.

The three people were led to safety by firefighters and treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

Willie Lynch, from the Fire and Rescue Service said the incident could have been much worse.

"The door was ablaze and the people were trapped upstairs in two separate flats," he said.

"During the incident our control centre talked to the resident and ensured them everything was being done to get the released as soon as possible."
