Blast hits Turkish army building Four dead in Turkish flats blast
(about 5 hours later)
Turkish rescue workers are searching the rubble of a five-storey building brought crashing down by an explosion officials blamed on a boiler fault. Four people have been killed and another four are missing in Turkey after a residential block was destroyed by an explosion, the Turkish army says.
Eight people were carried alive out of the rubble of the building in the city of Diyarbakir in south-east Turkey. General Ilker Basbug said the blast in Diyarbakir, which blew up a five-storey building used to house army families, was caused by a boiler fault.
But another seven were believed still to be trapped, Turkish television said. "The search for the trapped will continue throughout the night," said Gen Basbug, chief of land forces.
The building housed the families of Turkish soldiers, in an area where the army maintains a heavy presence because of its war with Kurdish rebels. At least eight people were carried alive out of the rubble.
At least two children were reported to have been among those rescued. None of those carried out had life-threatening injuries, security officials told the AFP news agency. At least two children were reported to have been among those rescued.

Diyarbakir is the largest city in Turkey's mainly Kurdish south-east. Police detained a man who carried out repair work on the boiler the day before, the state-run Anatolian news agency said.
But they said the detention was a precaution, while they investigated possible negligence, and that sabotage was not suspected.
