A suicide explosion has hit Sri Lanka's north-central town of Anuradhapura, killing several people, police said. A suicide blast in the Sri Lankan town of Anuradhapura has killed 20 people, including a top former army general, the defence ministry says.
"There was an explosion at an old bus stand in Anuradhapura," police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara was quoted by news agency Reuters as saying. Maj Gen Janaka Perera, one of Sri Lanka's most prominent army generals, and his wife died in the blast in the north-central Anuradhapura town.
Many others are reported to be wounded in the blast. A suicide bomber blew himself up inside the United National Party (UNP) office near a bus depot, officials said.
The Tamil Tiger rebels have been fighting a separatist war in Sri Lanka for a quarter of a century and 70,000 people have been killed in violence. They blamed the attack on separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.
