The Catholic teenager was attacked by about four to six people in the Granville Drive area of the town shortly before 0400 GMT on Sunday.
He suffered injuries to his head and hands which are not thought to be life threatening. One man has been arrested.
The attack happened in the same alleyway where 15-year-old Michael McIlveen was assaulted in May.
He later died from his injuries.
SDLP councillor Declan O'Loan said the attack showed "that the conditions exist in Ballymena for something like this to happen at any time".
"These underlying conditions must be tackled. All politicians have a clear and urgent responsibility to do this," Mr O'Loan said.
Sinn Fein assembly member Philip McGuigan also condemned the attack.
"I have always said that political leadership, particulary from within the unionist community, is needed to bring this to an end, and that is still quite clearly lacking," he said.
Police have appealed for anyone with any information to contact them. |
