A Moscow taxi driver lost control of his car and drove his vehicle onto a crowded sidewalk on Saturday afternoon. At least seven people were injured, including two Mexican nationals, who had come to Russia for the World Cup. | |
The accident occurred on Ilyinka Street near Red Square, when many tourists and locals were out celebrating the Russia 2018 Mundial. Video footage shows a yellow cab abruptly accelerating out of the line of slowly moving cars and swerving onto the sidewalk. The vehicle is seen running into several pedestrians and crashing into a road sign. | |
“According to preliminary data, the crash occurred when the driver lost control of the car,” Moscow police said, in a statement. A criminal investigation into the incident has been launched.Footage shot by bystanders shows the driver fleeing the site of the accident with a crowd following him. It remains unclear whether people managed to catch up with him or if police got to him first. | |
Police said the man, currently in custody, had a Kyrgyz driving license and said he had not driven into the crowd on purpose. | |
Seven people were injured, according to police. One woman reportedly received medium injuries, while all other pedestrians were slightly injured. | |
Two women, both citizens of Mexico, were caught up in the incident, receiving slight injuries, their Embassy said. | |
