A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection with a fire in which a mother died.

Angela Brown, 31, died after trying to rescue three of her children from the blaze at their home in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, on Sunday morning.

The youngster and two other boys, aged 15, have also been charged with theft.

The three, all from Kilwinning, made no plea or declaration and were remanded in custody after appearing at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

The fire, in the town's Culzean Place, broke out at about 0600 BST on Sunday.

Ms Brown managed to get her younger child, a three-year-old girl, out of the building before going back in to try to save her two sons, but was overcome by the blaze.

The three were pulled from the flat by fire crews but Ms Brown died in Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock.

Her sons, aged six and 12, are in a serious but stable condition at Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

Ms Brown's daughter is being cared for by relatives.

It is understood she also had two older children who had been staying with friends when the fire broke out.
