Three people were in a Renault Laguna which collided with a broken-down goods vehicle on the hard shoulder of the M4's eastbound carriageway between Port Talbot and Margam. They have appealed for witnesses to both incidents to come forward. Police said a red Rover 414 was driving from Cefn Cribwr towards Aberkenfig when it veered across a sharp bend in the road and hit a silver Nissan Almera coming the opposite way.
The man killed was a front-seat passenger in the Almera. The 34-year-old female driver of the Rover received fractures to her legs.
South Wales Police have appealed for witnesses to both incidents to come forward and contact them on 01656 655555 for the Aberkenfig crash and 01792 456999 for the M4 collision.
