Det Ch Insp Pete Dowling said: "While there is no suggestion at this stage that any weapons were involved, the attack on this man was extremely severe, and involved him being punched and kicked in the head.
"The only descriptions of the offenders are that they are white, all male and may have been carrying pizza boxes from a nearby takeaway.
"I would ask that anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information contact me as soon as possible."
A section of Greys Road, including the car park, remains closed while an investigation of the scene is carried out.
