About 4,000 people have been without water since a mains pipe burst in the early hours of Monday. About 4,000 people were left without water supplies after two mains pipes burst in Surrey.

A spokesman said major excavation had to be carried out to a depth of more than 6.6ft (2m) and the site now extended across the whole road. He said the pipes were repaired and water supplies were being restored by Tuesday afternoon.
He said: "Two mains, which are in good condition, are believed to have been fractured by movement in the road surface caused by heavy traffic." But the A22 - a major route - was likely to be closed until the weekend, he added.
