The brother of a disgraced Olympic gold medallist - who was jailed earlier this year for abusing young girls - has also been found guilty of child sex abuse.

John Phelps, 52, himself a former Olympic canoeist, was convicted of 16 offences between 1973 and 1993 when he ran a gym in Lagland Street, Poole.

Sentencing was adjourned at Bournemouth Crown Court until 27 October.

In May his brother, Olympic diver Brian Phelps, was jailed for nine years for abuse between 1976 and 1987.

On Monday, John Phelps was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault, rape and three counts of inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency against five young girls as young as four.

The former bodybuilder, of Edwina Drive, Poole, was found not guilty of a second count of rape and an alternative count of indecent assault.

Brian Phelps, who won a bronze medal at the 1960 Olympics in Rome when he was 16 years old, admitted 42 offences of abusing three young girls as young as six.

When allegations against him surfaced in 2003, he worked as a trampoline and swimming coach in Poole, Dorset.

He was subsequently put on the Sex Offenders Register.
