The bus was carrying middle school students from the town of Paramus when the incident took place, USA Today reports. Police said it is not known how many children were on the bus but they did confirm that several patients were taken to medical centers in the area. NorthJersey.com is citing “multiple sources” in reporting that one person died in the crash. However no official source has yet reported any fatalities. Governor Phil Murphy told a news conference that the bus was carrying 38 students and seven adults, including the driver. "Some patients are in critical condition and currently undergoing surgery, so please keep everybody in your prayers," Murphy added, confirming two fatalities - a student and a teacher.
"We had every injury type that you can imagine for a scenario like this. It's tragic," said Morris County Office Of Emergency Management Director Jeff Paul. "The children were all over, outside."
Mount Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum said the bus is "mangled" following the accident. "There's an incredible emergency response from throughout Morris County and by State Police.
