The public has been warned not to approach a registered sex offender who has gone missing after being released from custody on licence.

Strathclyde Police said Richard Wotherspoon, 18, was last seen in the Orbiston area of Bellshill on Thursday.

He was convicted of rape in April 2006 at the High Court in Edinburgh, and was sentenced to custody.

Wotherspoon was released on licence on 23 September, but has now failed to comply with the conditions.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said: "A warrant has been granted for his arrest. The police advise that Wotherspoon is a danger to women.

"Anyone who sees him or knows of his whereabouts should not approach him but should contact Strathclyde Police."
