WA make England pay in tour game Anderson spell encourages England
(about 1 hour later)
Chris Rogers took full advantage of an early reprieve as Western Australia reached 95-1 at lunch on day one of the two-day tour match against England. James Anderson captured two wickets to restrict Western Australia to 144-2 midway through the opening day of the two-day tour game with England.
The 29-year-old left-hander, who scored 319 for Northants last season, was dropped on 12 at second slip by Ashley Giles off Steve Harmison. Anderson, who took only two wickets for 303 in the first two Ashes Tests, had an opening spell of 1-9 off nine overs, an away-swinger ousting David Bandy.
He soon hit successive fours and passed fifty from 76 balls. Left-hander Chris Rogers was dropped on 12 by Ashley Giles in the next over off Steve Harmison and went on to make 66.
James Anderson found some away swing to oust David Bandy, then saw Shaun Marsh dropped on eight by Monty Panesar. But he fell to Anderson, who was left with figures of 2-19 from 16 overs.
Anderson, who took only two wickets for 303 runs in the first two Ashes Tests, had an opening spell of 1-9 from nine overs as WA reached 38-1 after an hour. Anderson's encouragingly economic return should have been even better, but Monty Panesar put down Shaun Marsh on eight at short mid-wicket.
With Anderson having struck in the ninth over, England should have added a second wicket in the next but Giles spilled a regulation catch. Rogers, who scored 319 for Northants last season, hit successive fours after his reprieve from Giles and passed fifty from 76 balls.
