Vaughan returns to the spotlight Anderson strikes in tour match
(about 9 hours later)
Michael Vaughan's comeback after his fourth knee operation continues with an appearance in the England side to face Western Australia over two days. James Anderson claimed an early breakthrough for England in the two-day tour match against Western Australia, who chose to bat first at the Waca.
The precise format of the match has not been confirmed, but Vaughan is likely to have at least one innings and spend time testing his knee in the field. Anderson, who took only two wickets for 303 runs in the first two Ashes Tests, had an opening spell of 1-8 from eight overs as WA reached 38-1 after an hour.
The match will be played at the Waca, the venue which will also host the third Test from next Thursday. Ashley Giles put down Chris Rogers on 12 at slip off Steve Harmison and the opener then hit successive boundaries.
Coach Duncan Fletcher has said Vaughan will not play in any Ashes Tests. Andrew Strauss leads an England 12 with six players from the second Ashes Test.
England's team to play WA might be supplemented by Academy players. Skipper Andrew Flintoff rests his ankle ahead of next week's Perth Test.
The Academy squad is based locally in Perth and contributed four players to the team beaten by the Cricket Australia Chairman's XI on Friday. Seamer Liam Plunkett was named in the 12 but did not take the field because of a dislocated finger.
But Fletcher might instead want his leading players to get match practice with Australia just one win away from winning back the Ashes. Vaughan's comeback after his fourth knee operation continues with an appearance at the venue for the third Test, starting on Thursday.
The press and the media like to jump on people's backs but Duncan is a strong enough character to ignore it Simon Jones Coach Duncan Fletcher has already quashed rumours of a return in that match, however, and added that Vaughan would not play at either Melbourne or Sydney in the remaining Ashes Tests of this series.
It may be that he is allowed to revert to his favourite trick in tour matches, selecting 14 players, with only 11 batting and 11 in the field at any one time. As much focus, if not more, will be on spinner Monty Panesar, who took a wicket with his second ball in Thursday's one-day tour match against a Chairman's XI at Lilac Hill, finishing with 2-63 from 10 overs.
The Western Australia team features Michael Hussey, who has hit 86, 91 and 61 not out in his first two Ashes Tests. Panesar, who took 32 wickets in his opening 10 Tests, including the scalps of Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam-ul-Haq, was left out of the opening two Test defeats to much media and public dismay.
Vaughan, on the other hand, has made nought and nine in his two innings for the Academy side in Perth.

The other hero from 2005 not fit to play, Simon Jones, has stepped up his rehabilitation and is hoping to take a full part in pre-season training at Glamorgan next March. The Western Australia team, who include several players who turned out for the Chairman's XI, are without Test batsman Mike Hussey, who withdrew shortly before the match began.
Interviewed by BBC Wales, he rushed to the defence of Fletcher, who has been severely criticised in the Ashes so far.
Jones said: "There were no complaints about Duncan last year but now we've lost a couple of games they're on his back. He's probably the best coach in the world.
"I can't believe what's happened. The press and the media like to jump on people's backs but Duncan is a strong enough character to ignore it."
