One paraglider pilot died and another suffered serious injuries following a mid-air collision.

Emergency services rushed to scene in Northborough, eight miles north of Peterborough, at 8.45am on bank holiday Monday.

A man in his 50s, believed to be from Lincolnshire, was found dead at the scene while the second paraglider, in his 40s, was airlifted to hospital with severe, potentially life-changing, injuries.

The identities of the two men, who were flying powered paragliders, have not yet been revealed.

Following the incident, police were at the scene, collecting evidence to conduct an investigation.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: "One of the pilots, a man in his 50s, sadly died at the scene.

"The second pilot, also a man, in his 40s, was taken to Nottingham Hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries."

The incident was initially referred to the AAIB (Air Accidents Investigation Branch) who have asked the UK Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association to conduct an investigation on their behalf.

The crash is not being treated as a criminal matter.
