Police responded to a call about a domestic disturbance east of Sunshine, a town 23 miles (37km) north of Washington DC, with initial reports of multiple shot victims inside a local home.  Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger said that the suspect, identified as Christopher Snyder, 41, killed three people in a house across the street from his own after his wife fled there. The suspect's wife who, along with two other people, escaped the rampage alive and unharmed, told police that Snyder had held her captive over the weekend. Three adults a resident of the house, a guest and a person who was working there were all shot dead by the attacker.
The suspect, who is believed to be known to police, was located at his home on Brown Farm Way, police reported, after an hours-long manhunt. They have embarked on negotiations with the man via phone as he refuses to surrender. Done with the shooting, Snyder returned to his house and engaged in a seven-hour-long negotiation with police. As he refused to surrender, police decided to raid the house. While the officers were breaking in, they heard a single gunshot and found Snyder deceased, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Local residents have been advised to remain safely where they are. Police say they "do not believe [the shooting] was random." As the manhunt was underway, local residents were advised to remain safely where they were.
