It is understood the couple, who both come from Derry, had only recently moved into the Transalla area. A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said she was "shocked" at the incident.
"We moved down from Derry for peace and quiet and this happens," she said.
Donegal Independent councillor Jimmy Harte said it wasn't the first time there had been a shooting in the area.

"Like every other citizen I think it's an affront to the people in the area.
"Anyone who wants to come in to disturb the local community should be aware of the consequences.
"Disrupting families and carrying out malicious deeds, it's not part of the community in Donegal," he said.
The injured man had only recently moved to the area, and is understood to be originally from Creggan in Derry.
