"The first thing I noticed was that there were bullet holes in the windscreen," he said.
"Our primary concern at that time was to remove the pup to our animal hospital, as it was fairly obvious from the state of the car and from an examination of the pup - there was an entry and an exit wound - that it had been shot by a bullet.
"We performed surgery through the night and the animal is critical but stable.
"The car was left in Manorcunningham which is a very quiet hamlet, nothing like this has really happened.
"I'm sure people are quite amazed at something like this happening on their doorstep," said Mr Roarty.
