Read hopes hit by tour match duck Read hopes hit by tour match duck
(about 1 hour later)
Reserve wicket-keeper Chris Read was out for a duck as England posted 259-8 from 50 overs in the one-day tour match against a Chairman's XI at Lilac Hill. Monty Panesar captured two wickets but a makeshift England XI looked on course for defeat against a Chairman's XI.
Read was one of several fringe players hoping for a Test recall, but lasted only five balls before finding mid-on. Panesar, left out of the first two Ashes Tests, struck with his second ball, and despite being hit for 16 in one over, returned to strike again.
Instead Alec Stewart, now 43, showed the way with 69 in as many balls, while another ex-England man, Adam Hollioake, fired four sixes in an unbeaten 38. The Chairman's XI still coasted to 162-2 from 25 overs in reply to England's 259-8 from their 50 overs.
Alec Stewart, leading the team aged 43, hit 69 from as many balls but his successor Chris Read fell for a duck.

Stalwart Stewart, who retired in 2003, launched two sixes and five fours, while another ex-England man, Adam Hollioake, fired four sixes in an unbeaten 38.

Monty Panesar's performance with the ball is the most anticipated in the England XI, which includes another Test start of yesteryear, Robin Smith. Stewart shared 112 with Essex batsman Ravi Bopara, who made 53 from 56 balls, to lead his side to a respectable total from a perilous 59-3.
The Chairman's XI made a fluent start with an opening stand of 82, before Panesar bowled Chris Rogers, who was attempting a reverse sweep.
Highly-rated wicket-keeper/batsman Luke Ronchi battered three sixes and 15 fours in his 89 from 49 balls, but Panesar removed him when he lured him down the wicket and Read executed the stumping.
