Campaigners against the new water charges plan to post leaflets to every household in Northern Ireland urging people not to pay their bills.

The leaflets are a counter to the government information guide launched last week by Regional Development Minister David Cairns.

Mr Cairns said the first bills, due next April, would be around £100.

But the group representing trade unions against water charges has printed 1m leaflets, urging consumers not to pay.

The leaflets describe the government information as "spin" and emphasise that the new government owned water company cannot turn off someone's domestic supply if they refuse to pay.

Thousands of leaflets will be distributed in newspapers later this month, but the bulk of them will be posted out to homes in January.
