A Serbian football hooligan has been jailed for 10 years for attacking a policeman during a match in Belgrade.

Uros Misic, 20, was convicted by Belgrade's district court capital of attempted murder in December 2007.

The court heard how the Red Star fan had tried to force a blazing flare into the policeman's mouth during the game at his club's home ground.

The policeman, Nebojsa Trajkovic, suffered serious injuries in what the judge called a "lynching".

"Burning a man's face with a torch is monstrous," Judge Vladimir Lazovic said upon delivering the verdict, Serbia's Beta news agency reports.

Two other Red Star fans involved in the incident were convicted earlier this month.

Milos Zimonja was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison, while Slavisa Drakul was given a one-year jail term.

Television images of the rioting during the match sparked outrage across Serbia.
