Beltrame’s life became the fourth claimed by a lone gunman’s assault on Friday, which left over a dozen more injured. The attacker, 26-year-old Redouane Lakdim, reportedly pledged allegiance to Islamic state (IS, formerly ISIS) and shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ when he stormed the supermarket. Macron dubbed the attack an act of “Islamic terrorism,” though he added that security services were still working to establish whether IS was really behind the attack. | Beltrame’s life became the fourth claimed by a lone gunman’s assault on Friday, which left over a dozen more injured. Since 2014, Lakdim had been monitored by the French security services because of his ties to radical Islam, the Paris prosecutor said. He was added to a list, known as “Fiche S,” of people considered a threat to national security who should be constantly watched. | Since 2014, Lakdim had been monitored by the French security services because of his ties to radical Islam, the Paris prosecutor said. The attack in Trebes follows a pattern that has emerged across Europe in the recent years, according to ex-MI5 intelligence officer Annie Machon. “People are carrying out these low-tech types of attack with high victim rates,” she told RT.The majority of those behind recent terrorist attacks in France were known to intelligence services. But for some reason they are not being monitored carefully enough and followed around, the former MI5 agent believes. The perpetrators “are allowed to get more radicalized and carry out these appalling deeds,” she added. | |
Machon, who resigned in 1996 to blow the whistle on the incompetence and crimes of spies, insists that the intelligence agencies have “an over-reliance” on electronic surveillance. “They ignore to a certain extent the real importance of pre-emptive human intelligence, when you send agents to these communities to find out what people are thinking, what they are planning, what they are about to do. That is what is lacking at the moment,” she said. |
