A 92-year-old woman has been struck in the face by burglars at her home in south Belfast.

Five men forced their way into her home at Marlborough Park North at about 2000 GMT on Tuesday.

Two of them held her in her living room while the others searched her home. After demanding money and threatening her, they hit her a number of times.

They made off with jewellery. The pensioner managed to get to a neighbour's house to raise the alarm.

A police spokeswoman said the men were believed to be wearing green-coloured clothing, masks or scarves over their faces and were aged in their 20s or 30s.

She said two of the men may have spoken with southern accents.

"Police would ask the community in south Belfast, especially the elderly and vulnerable, to make sure their home is secure and be extremely wary of who may call at their door," she added.
