Police officers and the Police Marine Unit have been carrying out investigations at the scene. The woman is believed to be aged in her 50s, an Essex Police spokesman said.
"They found her in the middle of the river. She looked to be in her teens or 20s," Michael Bolwell, who lives on a nearby riverboat, told the BBC. The Police Marine Unit carried out an investigation in the area and a post-mortem examination is to be carried out.
"She was dressed as though she'd been out for the night - she wasn't dressed for the weather."
