The car was seen to go into the sea from a jetty near Fraserburgh fish market, off Shore Street, at about 0650 BST. The silver Audi A3 hatchback was seen plunging into the sea from a jetty near Fraserburgh fish market, off Shore Street, at about 0650 BST.
A Grampian Police spokesman said officers were trying to establish what had happened and were planning to recover the car. The occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.
He added that the incident was being investigated as a fatal road accident. The car has since been removed from the sea by a crane and will be examined for mechanical defects. Grampian Police have appealed for witnesses.
