Naomi Bunten, 55, a nurse from Birmingham, had been encouraged by her travel operator to turn up early in case alternative arrangements were put in place. Gilly Mitchell, a nanny living in London, had made back-up plans in case she and boyfriend Adam Cox could not get on their 1500 BST train to Paris.
She was heading for Lake Garda in Italy on a trip with Treyn and Great Rail Journeys and on Saturday morning was informed there would be a 45 minute delay before she could travel. The couple, both 23, visited St Pancras station on Saturday morning hours before their train was expected to leave to find out what was going on.
She said she was packing when she first heard about the fire. They said they had already bought ferry tickets so they could make it to Paris the actual day they wanted to.
"It was very uncertain," she said. Miss Mitchell said: "The information board is a bit misleading because it says to come at your scheduled time, but it seems to be first come first served."
"We booked the train journey because of the stress of airports and of course this has been so stressful but Treyn, the holiday company, were excellent." Her boyfriend said they had been told there was a possibility they may even be placed on an earlier train than they had originally booked.
