A security guard has died after he was struck by a wrought iron gate which was blown into him by high winds.

Robert Street, 59, suffered a fractured skull when he was hit by the gate in Bidston in Wirral, Merseyside.

Police and health and safety officials are carrying out an investigation into how the accident happened.

It is thought Mr Street may have been trying to open or close the gate when a gust of wind blew it into him, knocking him unconscious.

Mr Street was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The accident happened during high winds on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "I can confirm that a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive has been launched following the death of a 59-year-old man on Sunday 3 December.

"The man was working as a security guard at a site at Statham Road, Bidston, and officers were called to Arrowe Park Hospital shortly before 1330 GMT.

"At this moment in time there are no suspicious circumstances and it is believed that the deceased died as a result of an accident with a gate in the high winds.

"A full investigation is being carried out into the circumstances surrounding the death."
