One student has been confirmed dead and at least five students were shot Tuesday morning at a high school in Kentucky. The school was placed on lockdown and emergency responders are already on scene. Two students have been confirmed dead and 19 students were injured in a shooting at a Kentucky high school Tuesday morning.
The suspect has been apprehended by police according Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin who confirmed the “tragic shooting” by saying one person has been confirmed dead with “multiple others wounded”, however much is still unknown, he wrote on Twitter. Two 15-year-old students, one male and one female, were fatally shot by a fellow 15-year-old male student armed with a handgun. The shooter is currently in police custody and will be charged with murder and attempted murder, according to Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin.
“Please do not speculate or spread hearsay...Let’s let the first responders do their job and be grateful that they are there to do it for us,” he wrote. Out of the 19 injured students, 14 of those received gunshot wounds according to Gov. Bevin who gave an emotional press conference in Marshall County at 12:30 local time. The female student died at the scene, while the male victim passed away at a local hospital.
Kentucky State Police say the scene is now secured, the suspect is in custody and more details will be confirmed as information is obtained. The shooter was “peacefully” apprehended at the scene by police according to Gov. Bevin. “It is a tragic day for all of us,” Commissioner for State Police Rick Sanders told reporters during the press briefing.
Local news agency ‘Marshall County Daily’ reports that the school has been placed on lockdown. Family members of all affected students have been notified, however further information pertaining to the case, including the shooter’s identity and possible motive, will not be released so as not to compromise the investigation.
“There has been a shooting at Marshall County High School and the school is on lock down. We will bring you more information as soon as it becomes available. Multiple agencies currently on the scene,” the statement read. The school had active shooting training a few weeks ago and "students did exactly what they were trained to do," according to Sanders.
This is the second shooting at a US high school in the last 24 hours. On Monday, a teenage girl was shot by a teenage boy in the cafeteria of Italy High School in Texas. The school in Benton had over 1,000 students in grades 10 through 12. Marshall County has a population of about 31,000 people.
