The mother of Shannon Matthews, who was missing for several weeks, is due in court later along with the man accused of her abduction. The mother of Shannon Matthews, who went missing for several weeks earlier this year, has been charged with her kidnap and false imprisonment.
Karen Matthews, 32, from Dewsbury, is accused of child neglect and perverting the course of justice. The new charges were revealed as Karen Matthews appeared at Leeds Crown Court.
Michael Donovan, 39, is charged with kidnap and false imprisonment. The 32-year-old, of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, has denied those charges and an earlier charge of perverting the course of justice.
They are expected to enter pleas at Leeds Crown Court in connection with the disappearance of nine-year-old Shannon on 19 February. Michael Donovan, 39, also from Dewsbury, pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnap and false imprisonment.
The schoolgirl was found in Batley Carr, less than a mile from her Dewsbury Moor home, 24 days after she went missing. The uncle of Mrs Matthews' former partner, Craig Meehan, also now faces a charge of perverting the course of justice, which he denied.
Mr Donovan, of Lidgate Gardens, Dewsbury, is accused of "unlawfully and by force or fraud" taking Shannon Matthews against her will. Mrs Matthews did not enter a plea on child neglect charges.
He is further charged with unlawfully imprisoning the schoolgirl and detaining her against her will. Nine-year-old Shannon was found on 19 February, 24 days after she went missing following a school swimming trip.
