Hundreds of Newcastle United fans gathered outside at St James' Park to express their anger at the club's owner Mike Ashley as Kevin Keegan apparently left his position as the club's manager.

Paul Bunyan, 44, Longbenton, Newcastle

"The club is in turmoil yet again. If Mike Ashley is not willing to invest in Newcastle United by buying players, how can he expect the fans to invest their time and hard-earned cash?"

Andrew Percy, 32, Blyth, Northumberland

"Kevin Keegan has never given less than 100% for this football club and I am disgusted that he has been undermined by Mike Ashley. I will be watching Blyth Spartans from now on as it seems non-league football is a more honest version of football."

James Ripley, 31, Los Angeles, United States

"I work in sports marketing in America and they would not run a football club in the unprofessional way Newcastle United is being run. The manager's job at this club is a poisoned chalice and the only person who could have been immune to it was Keegan."

Jason Stewart, 32, Walker, Newcastle

"I'm devastated by today's news and it seems the club has taken five steps backwards. I'll be going to the next home match but it will only be to walk out in support of Kevin Keegan."

Gemma Somers, 19, Walker, Newcastle

"We are all hoping Dennis Wise is not the replacement for Keegan as he has no right to take over from a man who is a legend at this football club. The fans have been treated really badly as the club has not even told us why our manager has left us."

Jackie Leung, 22, Fenham, Newcastle

"I'm originally from Hong Kong and Newcastle is known in China and throughout the world as the club that sacks its manager every couple of years. If they don't stick by a manager sooner or later the club will never get anywhere."

Bernadette Stainsby, 52, Shildon, County Durham

"Mike Ashley brought hope to this city when he bought the football club but that has now gone with his treatment of Kevin Keegan. We have lost a manager of great integrity and it is soul-destroying."

John Graham, 37, Fenham, Newcastle

"I know friends who have cut their season tickets up at hearing today's news. Kevin Keegan motivated a team to get us a point at Old Trafford and all Mike Ashley does is drink down the Bigg Market and pretend to be a Geordie."
