Westminster - live updates: Theresa May to reshuffle Cabinet as MPs return from recess Westminster - live updates: Cabinet reshuffle confusion as Conservatives mistakenly announce Chris Grayling as new party chairman
(about 5 hours later)
Theresa May will today carry out her new year’s Cabinet reshuffle in a bid to reassert her authority after the calamitous election result last summer.
Despite pressure to sack either Chancellor Philip Hammond or Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, all the most senior ministers are now expected to remain in their posts. Theresa May has started her new year’s reshuffle in a bid to reassert her authority after the calamitous election result last summer.
But Education Secretary Justine Greening has been reported to be the most prominent casualty in today’s reshuffle, after clashes with the Prime Minister over the Government’s education policy. But it has quickly descended into chaos after the Conservatives announced the wrong person as the party’s new chairman
The Conservatives’ official Twitter account put out that Chris Grayling, the controversial Transport Secretary, would take on the role – a tweet immediately shared by some Tory MPs.
But the tweet was quickly deleted and – 15 minutes later –Brandon Lewis, the Immigration Minister, arrived in No 10, where he was later confirmed as party chairman.
Ms May is also expected to replace Damian Green, who was sacked as the Cabinet Office minister and de facto Prime Minister last month for misleading statements over pornography found on his office computer. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is widely tipped for a promotion alongside Chris Grayling, a loyal ally of the Prime Minister and Transport Secretary. Ms May is also expected to replace Damian Green, who was sacked as the Cabinet Office minister and de facto Prime Minister last month for misleading statements over pornography found on his office computer.
