Aid plane 'missing' in DR Congo DR Congo aid plane hits mountain
(about 5 hours later)
A plane carrying aid workers has gone missing in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UN officials have said. A humanitarian plane carrying 15 passengers and two crew members has crashed into a mountain in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
An unnamed official has told Reuters news agency that the plane was carrying 17 passengers and had crashed into a mountain near Bukavu. A helicopter survey indicated there are "no known survivors" from the crash, according to the company which operates the plane, Air Serv.
A rescue helicopter had not been able to land and it was not clear if there were survivors, the official said. The company provides air transport for international aid agencies.
It was reported late on Monday that the plane lost contact with ground control after leaving Kisangani. Rescuers spotted the 19-seat Beechcraft plane about 15km (nine miles) north-west of Bukavu early on Tuesday.
Air Serv said it was last contacted in heavy rain 10 minutes from Bukavu.
