The paper said the object was a hand grenade, though this is unconfirmed.
"I heard a huge bang," a local resident told the newspaper.
Police said the station and surrounding area have been cordoned off.
A spokesman said there was no reason to believe the explosion was terrorism-related. 
The underground station and an adjacent square were closed while police carry out checks, they said in a statement.
It read: "According to information, the injured man picked up an object from the ground.
"This had then exploded and hurt the man seriously. He has been taken to hospital."
