After eight days, the largest protests in Iran in years appear to be winding down, calmed, at least in part, by the government.

But a closer look at what set off the outrage in the first place suggests that the country’s president may have lit the match.

On today’s episode:

• Thomas Erdbrink, the Tehran bureau chief for The New York Times.

Background reading:

• The demonstrations in dozens of Iranian cities were set off by miscalculations in a long-simmering internal power struggle.

• Members of the establishment have taken turns assigning blame: The chief prosecutor cited “the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia” in the protests, while hard-liners and reformists accused each other.
