It is understood that he had just served a group of teenagers who had walked away from the van when the shooting occurred.
The youths heard two bangs and returned to the scene to find the victim lying slumped and obviously injured in his vehicle.
Incident room
A lone gunman, believed to have been armed with a shotgun, is thought to have fired at Mr Allison through the serving hatch of his van.
Armed police carried out a detailed investigation of the scene and an incident room is to be set up nearby.
It is understood police are following a positive line of inquiry and the shooting is not thought at this stage to be gang-related.
Police officers conduct a sweep of Strathesk Road
Det Supt Brian Doneghan, senior investigating officer on the case, said: "I have no doubt in my mind that this was an attempt on Mr Allison's life.
"I am particularly concerned that an attack, with a firearm, has been carried out with such blatant disregard to the safety of others in the area.
"We know that children had just left the van minutes before the shooting."
The gunman, fled on foot along Strathesk Road towards Pinocchio's Nursery.
He is a white man, 5ft 9ins to 5ft 10ins with greying hair, a slim to medium build and was wearing black clothing, white trainers and a black beanie-style hat.
Witnesses report seeing a man fitting that description hanging around the area of Strathesk Road earlier in the day.
Officers are also looking into any possible links between the shooting and an alleged assault on the victim's son around a month ago. Police said two people had since been charged in connection with thatincident.
