A sheriff’s office in Colorado has reported “multiple deputies down” in a shooting south of Denver, with the gunman not yet in custody. A gunman opened fire on sheriff's deputies responding to a call in Colorado, killing one and wounding others before officers killed the assailant.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office tweeted that deputies were responding to reports of a domestic disturbance when "shots were fired and multiple deputies were injured". The Sheriff's Office called on the public to avoid the area. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said five deputies and two civilians were also shot by the suspect. Deputies were responding to a “domestic disturbance” call, the law enforcement agency said.
There was no information on the status of the deputies, or any civilian injuries, the office said. At least one deputy was injured, said Jason Blanchard, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office. “Suspect shot & believed to be dead & no longer a threat,” the office's Twitter account said.
Deputies were responding to a call of a domestic disturbance around 5.15 am local time at the Copper Canyon Apartments on County Line Road in Highlands Ranch - about 20 miles south of Denver - the Sheriff’s Office said. The scene remains active. A procession to honour the deceased officer was swiftly planned for the same morning, with the sheriff's department warning of heavy traffic.
A number of local police forces are on alert over the incident, while a SWAT team is said to be responding. A major road south of Denver has also been shut down in the wake of the incident.
