Tributes have poured in to a Sunderland man whose body was found at a recycling site on Christmas Eve.

Jay McLaren was reported missing on 23 December after he failed to return home from a night out in Sunderland.

He was last seen just after 4am outside a city centre bar, according to Northumbria police. Authorities believe he was taken to the recycling plant in Houghton after climbing into a bin in the early hours of the morning.

Police do not believe anyone else was involved in his death but are appealing for any information to help trace the 28-year-old’s last movements.

Just weeks before, the father-of-one paid tribute to his “beautiful angel” daughter on her second birthday. A comment posted on the photo after his death reads: “My heart breaks to see this photo... and know he’s no longer here... such a sad, sad time. My heart goes out to the family and friends of this amazing dad, son, husband and friend.”

The Sunderland Sunday League posted a touching tribute to the keen amateur footballer.

“We are absolutely devastated to announce the passing of Jay McLaren. All our thoughts are with Jay’s fiancé, daughter, family and friends at this extremely sad time. RIP Jay – you will never be forgotten,” they said.

Police said Mr McLaren’s family wanted to issue a warning to drinkers and partygoers to stay safe, particularly as New Year’s Eve approaches.

Anyone who may have seen or spoken to Mr McLaren in the early hours of Saturday 23 December 2017 should contact police on 101 quoting 1205 231217.
