Not guilty plea over baby death

A 21-year-old man has denied murdering a six-month-old baby whose body was found in a drain in the West Midlands.

Sherwain Smith, of no fixed address, pleaded not guilty to murdering Troy Simpson who went missing from his home in Smethwick in February.

His body was later found in a culvert on nearby wasteland.

Mr Smith also pleaded not guilty at Birmingham Crown Court to a charge of perverting the course of justice. A trial has been set for 27 February.

Troy, who had been reported missing by his mother and grandmother, was found dead by police search teams on 8 February beside Thimblemill Brook, Smethwick, about 330 yards (300m) away from his home in The Uplands.
