The first victim died before he arrived at hospital. David Sykes, who owns a newsagents near the scene, said: "It was an argument between two fellas and it got out of hand and two got stabbed.
"It's a very sad reflection on our society today."
Workers in a nearby chemists said they were in the shop when the attack took place.
A woman, who did not want to be named, said: "There were suddenly crowds of people around and people were running in the shop saying 'someone's been stabbed.'
"It's unusual round here but it's not unusual for the world at the moment. You just don't expect it to happen where you work."
