A spokesman from the Environment Agency said preliminary investigations indicated that the incidents were not linked. Norman Henderson of the DoE said there was no evidence of pollution, and that low oxygen levels in the water may have been a factor in both incidents.
"The bulk of the fish appear to have been dead for several days, although a few live and distressed fish are still visible," he said. "There's a lot of vegetation at the bottom and as that dies off, it uses up a lot of oxygen and that in turn kills the fish."
"Our staff are working hard to establish this exact cause of the incident." Mr Henderson said a clean-up of the canal was recently put at £1m per mile of water.
