Det Supt John Raine, of Cambridgeshire Police, said: "We are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of this baby. Det Insp Jim McCrorie, of Cambridgeshire Police, said his team of 15 officers still had "no idea whatsoever" as to the identity of the baby, or the mother.
"We are also concerned for the mother. It may be that she needs some medical attention urgently and we would urge her to go to a hospital." He said: "Police officers remain at the scene and investigations by specialist search teams are continuing throughout the afternoon.
"Naturally, our thoughts have turned to the mother of this baby and we are concerned that she may need some medical help.
"We are urging her to go to her local hospital to get the attention she may need."
A post mortem examination was carried out at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, to try to determine the age, gender, ethnicity and preliminary cause of death.
