NI voting system 'could be model'

The individual voter registration system piloted in Northern Ireland should be extended to the rest of the UK, the Electoral Commission has said. Electoral Commissioner Dr Henrietta Campbell said there had been no option but for Northern Ireland to change. She said this was due to concerns about electoral fraud. However, she said that the system was working and was something for which Northern Ireland could be proud. "It's not often we lead the way, but because we've had to make huge strides to ensure that electoral fraud couldn't take place and to ensure and to continue to ensure that people were on the register, I believe that we have a system in place of which we should be very proud," she said. |
