He suffered leg injuries and doctors had to insert a steel plate into his leg.
"I find it hard to sleep at night because I can't get this man's face out of my head," he said.
Speaking publicly for the first time since his ordeal, he said his partner and children were also under stress following the attack.
"My youngest boy is afraid to go out on the street in case this man gets him," he said.
"It's not fair a 12-year-old should have to go through that because of some lunatic."
