With most of the UK politicians still on holiday, many of the papers focus on the US, and White House hopeful Barack Obama's choice of running mate. Senator Joe Biden's age, working class roots and foreign policy expertise make him a formidable vice-presidential candidate, says the Sunday Times. All in all, it says, the next 10 weeks will be a fascinating battle. Not least, notes the Sunday Telegraph, because of the great unspoken issue - that one candidate is a black American. Lottery luck The 2008 Beijing Games provide plenty of pictures for the papers and the Observer uses the Olympics to argue that public spending has its uses. It says the best medal haul in a century was the result not of national luck but the National Lottery. The Independent on Sunday looks at the lobbying taking place by big business ahead of London 2012. It has been investigating the freebies offered to key decision-makers and suggests junketing is the new Olympic sport. Conservative holiday The News of the World reveals the government is to switch troops destined for Iraq to Afghanistan. Applauding the deployment, it says Prime Minister Gordon Brown will make a statement to parliament when it resumes this autumn. The Sunday Mirror has pictures of Conservative leader David Cameron on what it calls his "real" summer holiday - not in Cornwall, but on board a luxury yacht in the Aegean. It wonders how the news will go down with struggling families and suggests this was the press were not invited. Beautiful music The Mail on Sunday reports the US detective agency employed by the fund set up to find Madeleine McCann will not have its contract renewed. It says there are concerns over the lack of progress it has made. Residents near Bristol Zoo have complained about the early morning singing of a pair of amorous Agile Gibbons, says the Sunday Telegraph. However, a primate expert told the paper: "These people are lucky they can hear them. It's a beautiful and melodic symphony." |
