Superintendent Ken Eccles said police had been involved in extensive negotiations with both clubs and the IFA in the weeks before the game.
"In the most part this was successful, however, an element were intent on facing the police," he said.
"Officers gave supporters ample opportunity to leave the area, stopping several times along the Boucher Road and giving repeated warnings.
"Police thank both clubs for their efforts in trying to calm the situation and are keen to continue negotiation for the next game."
