A man has been arrested after officials saw waste being tipped on open ground from a lorry.

Environment Agency Wales officers say they were called to a disused scrapyard in Neath, where they saw mixed waste being loaded into the truck.

The agency said several loads were dumped near a park and ride car park at Ynysforgan, near Morriston, Swansea.

The driver was arrested and released on bail. The agency said investigations were continuing.

The agency said the waste from the site at Earlswood included earth, plastic fragments, metal and timber.

Steve Williams, the agency's environmental crime team leader, said: "Dumping controlled waste at illegal, unsuitable sites can harm the environment.

"Unknown contaminants and chemicals from waste could leak through soils, damaging nearby watercourses and harming wildlife.

"Operators acting illegally for financial gain threaten the livelihoods of legitimate waste collectors, who run their businesses in line with waste regulations."

The Environment Agency's emergency hotline is 0800 80 70 60, and calls are treated in confidence.
