A police dog handler who began tweeting and blogging to help him emotionally recover after the pair were stabbed has scooped a social media award.

PC Dave Wardell was injured and his dog Finn almost killed in a knife attack in Stevenage in October 2016.

He won the independent Police Twitter Award for best tweeting dog account and beat winners in 15 other categories, becoming the overall winner.

PC Wardell said receiving the accolade was "unbelievable".

The national awards were set up by a member of the public to recognise the best police Twitter accounts.

They are voted for by the public and were hosted this year by West Yorkshire Police.
